Call for Proposals - Special Issue on Mobile and Responsive Mapping

Cartographic Perspectives is planning a special issue on Mobile and Responsive Cartography. We are primarily seeking peer-reviewed research articles, narrative case studies, and position papers.   Mobile and responsive reference and navigation maps are relatively well-researched and established in industry and professional settings. However, there is less extensive research on many other areas of mobile cartography. We seek to curate a special issue centered on these lesser-researched subjects, including:

• Mobile and responsive thematic mapping
• User-centered research in mobile/responsive mapping
• Studies on cognition/perception in mobile maps
• Mobile walking tours and other navigation maps for specific or specialized purposes
• Mobile maps that are accessible and/or developed by/for marginalized communities
• Maps for novel device types such as smartwatches
• Reports from practitioners on designing maps that work across devices 

  We encourage submissions from researchers and practitioners in a variety of fields, including geography, human-computer interaction, information visualization, urban planning, communications, and more.

• We seek submissions in the following formats:
• Peer-reviewed full papers (about 5,000-8,000 words), to be reviewed by at least two reviewers in a double-blind review process
• Case studies in mobile/responsive cartographic design (about 2,000-4,000 words) from cartographers, visualization practitioners, other industry professionals, students, and others, to be reviewed by the editors of the special issue
• Position papers (about 2,000-4,000 words) describing an opinion, new perspectives on existing work, or interesting future directions, to be reviewed by the editors of the special issue

  Please submit a brief abstract or description of your project (150-250 words) by Friday, November 20, 2026. Your submission can be emailed to cp-special@nacis.org.   We expect to ask authors for their full submissions in February or March, 2027. Please feel free to reach out to the guest editors with any questions prior to submitting your abstract.   AI Policy:  The guest editors for this special issue encourage authors to refrain from using AI tools for their submissions and to seek human peer and colleague help for tasks such as editing instead. Submissions should always sound like the authors’ own voice. If desired by authors, limited AI usage for grammar editing or translation is permitted.  If AI tools are used, authors must submit a statement which explicitly discloses what AI tools and versions are used, how they are used, and for what purposes. If AI tools are used, they must be used responsibly, respecting high standards of data security, confidentiality, and copyright protection.
