A close examination of the history of the publication of its seven identified variants (1755-1775) indicates, however, that the map is properly understood in terms of the British, and more specifically London, market for maps and geographical information. There, it contributed to public discussions about the nature of the British empire and the British nation. This study also demonstrates the validity and necessity of applying the established bibliographical scheme of edition, printing, issue, and state to maps. ER -
